Planning
Book Your Movers Early
The best moving companies fill up fast, especially on weekends and at the end of the month. Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and time.
Create a Moving Checklist
Write down every task that needs to happen before, during, and after your move. Break it into weekly milestones so nothing sneaks up on you.
Notify Important Parties
Update your address with USPS, your bank, employer, insurance providers, subscriptions, and the DMV at least 2 weeks before your move date.
Packing
Start Packing Early
Begin with items you rarely use — seasonal clothes, books, decor. Leave daily essentials for last. Starting 3–4 weeks out makes moving week much less chaotic.
Label Every Box
Write the room AND a brief description on every box. "Kitchen — pots and pans" is far more helpful than just "Kitchen." Your movers and your future self will thank you.
Use the Right Boxes
Heavy items like books go in small boxes. Light items like pillows and linens go in large boxes. Overpacking large boxes is one of the most common (and painful) moving mistakes.
Protect Fragile Items
Wrap dishes individually in packing paper or towels. Fill empty space in boxes with crumpled paper to prevent shifting. Mark boxes "FRAGILE" on all sides.
Moving Day
Have a Clear Path
Before your crew arrives, clear walkways, hallways, and staircases of any obstacles. This speeds up the move and prevents injuries.
Disassemble Furniture Ahead of Time
If you can, take apart bed frames, desks, and large shelving units the night before. It saves significant time on moving day.
Keep Essentials Separate
Pack a "first night" bag with toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, medications, and anything you'll need immediately. Don't let it go on the truck.
Do a Final Walkthrough
Before you leave your old place, check every room, closet, cabinet, and drawer. Check the attic, garage, and outdoor spaces too. You'd be surprised what gets left behind.
After Your Move
Unpack Systematically
Start with the kitchen and bedrooms — the rooms you'll use most immediately. Resist the urge to unpack everything at once. Take it one room at a time.
Check for Damage
Inspect your belongings and your new home for any damage that may have occurred during the move. Document anything you find and report it promptly.
Meet Your Neighbors
Introduce yourself early. Good neighbors are one of the best parts of settling into a new home, and it starts with a simple hello.
